Christmas activities 2015

Once again, Christmas for The Barnby Choir began with the singing of carols in Nether Alderley Church on the first Saturday morning in December. As always, the programme included many familiar carols, in which the choir was ably assisted by the congregation, as well as some beautiful but less well known carols sung by the choir alone. A new dimension was added this year, in that two small children belonging to one of our members were able to provide a percussion element for ‘Jingle Bells’ and also add their young voices to both ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘Silent Night’. It was a truly memorable occasion for all who took part.

Our Christmas concert, on Sunday 13 December, attracted a large audience to the United Reformed Church in Wilmslow. The programme featured Christmas pieces by Parry and Vaughan Williams in the first half, as well as a new composition by our conductor Lloyd Buck. In the second half, we presented a selection of traditional carols, and the audience joined in enthusiastically when invited. We were very pleased to welcome soloists Eleanor Garside, soprano and Oliver Dunn, baritone, together with organist Elin Rees. Thanks to all for their accomplished contribution.

The following Tuesday, some 20 members of the Choir went along once again to Oakmere residential home in Handforth to sing carols during the afternoon, accompanied by Doug Macdonald on keyboard. Many residents turned out to hear us and joined in a number of items, including a few special requests. Afterwards both choir and audience enjoyed seasonal refreshments of mulled wine and Christmas cake. Many thanks to staff and residents for their warm welcome.
